Programme Description
This third Youth Works programme to be developed within the Bridgend
borough was officially launched in January 2005.
The programme has strong multi-agency support and the LSG are working
towards sourcing additional funding as the programme is not located in a
Community First area, which makes locating funding more difficult.
The Marlas Estate is based within the ward of Cornelly, which has a
population of 5982 according to the 2001 Census. A large proportion of
the housing in Cornelly, and in particular the Marlas Estate, is Social
Housing. Launched officially in April 2005, the Youth Works Marlas pilot
has gained a great deal of anecdotal evidence and project statistics to
support the need for its continuance. Valleys 2 Coast gave Youth Works a
flat on the estate from which to base its pilot project.
The youth club sessions offer young people pool, art and craft,
Playstations, PC’s, Games, Sports and most importantly a place to
congregate with their peers away from older residents complaints and
away from being involved in criminal or annoyance behaviour on the
estate.
Lindsey Tyson is the part time Co-ordinator working on the project
and there are currently 48 young people registered as members.
