Programme Description
The Caerau Parc estate is located at the most northerly point of the
ward of Caerau and as such is removed both socially and economically
from the rest of the communities in Caerau. Despite there being many
groups and organisations providing services for young people in Caerau,
very few young people from Caerau Parc access existing provision because
it is located outside of the area that they identify as their community
therefore the Youth Works programme is the main provider of youth
services for the estate.
Youth Works Caerau was established in September 2004 - made possible by
three year funding from Cymorth - Welsh Assembly. The programme
therefore attracts a large number of young people to the drop-in centre
and in the last quarter (June to August 2005) has worked with
approximately 133 young people with total attendances of over 1,000.
Programme Manager Davina Healey has reported on the various activities
managed each month by the centre, a summary is included below :
- Building was delivered and erected on site on 8th March.
Residents co-operated well, despite disruptions such as road
closures and restricted parking. New building was officially opened
in April. Fun day was held with activities such as nail art, face
painting, coconut shy, bouncy castle, stocks etc.
- From February Youth Works Caerau have facilitated the ASDAN
youth challenge award. The weekly ASDAN group identified a piece of
land that had historically been used as a site for numerous arson
fires. The young people designed and created a decorative “sun”,
which is still intact and being improved, with residents adding to
the planting.
- Young people have completed an art project at Millennium
Stadium, watched a rugby match at Cardiff Arms Park and met the
players.
- Total attendances January to April 2006: 799
