Programme Name: Youth Works Darwen

  Telephone: 01254 704320

Programme Description

Bullet Awarded first place at the 2000 British Community Safety Awards.
Bullet Highly recommended at the 2000 European Crime Prevention Award Ceremony in Brussels.

The Youth Works Project operates from within the Sudellside area of Darwen. We have continued to develop relationships with young people from the Woodvale / Birch Hall and Bold Venture areas of the town. This has been achieved through outreach / detached sessions with a number of young people attending sessions and activities at the base.

In January 2004 we moved premises to a new base which was three shops, which have been knocked into an open plan space with :

  • a ‘chill out’ area including settees, floor cushions, TV, playstation and music system,
  • a café style area with computers (all with internet access), tables and chairs, young peoples information/leaflets,
  • table tennis and pool area with decks,
  • pottery room.

Youth Works aims to empower young people by providing them with the opportunities to make changes in the community in which they live. This is done through :

  • Encouraging young people to voice their opinions and say how they feel
  • Providing activities, which will encourage interaction from young people and others within the community
  • Encouragement and development of parental / community skills to aid sustainability
  • Providing and developing positive role models amongst young people and within the community
  • Providing a safe, secure and non-judgmental environment which allows young people to develop their confidence and self esteem in order to allow them to make informed choices about their own lives
  • But most importantly we feel that the young people who attend the project have lasting relationships as they are encouraged to just be themselves but most importantly have a great deal of fun.

Monitoring and Evaluation

Our work is continually monitored on a regular basis. Following each session we, as a staff team, discuss any issues arising, anything we need to address further and what was successful. Young people are also encouraged to voice their opinions on what they enjoyed and what they didn't.

Our work is reviewed on a three-month basis therefore allowing staff, young people and the local community to reassess our work on a regular basis. Any projects we deliver are evaluated at the end and a report is produced in partnership with young people and displayed in a project file at the base for anyone to read.

If you require further information on our project please contact, either Tracy Scott, Project Officer or Lesley Hall on 01254 704320.
