Programme Description
The two Youth Works programmes (Chadderton and Stoneleigh) managed by
Rob Trueblood are fully staffed and fully financed. Both programmes have
set up youth forums to ensure that young people are involved in the
decision making processes of their programmes.
Programme activities June to August 2005
Both programmes have each delivered a wide range of activities during
the last quarter and have jointly participated in organising a number of
events such as :
- Cricket Fun Day - 16 July : part of the Oldham Festival of
Diversity Month. The session was organised by Youth Works in
partnership with Oldham Libraries, Community Links and Oldham
Cricket Club and attended by young people from both Chadderton and
Stoneleigh including 47 community members.
- Stoneleigh Park Fun Day - 5 August : working in partnership with
a number of agencies such as Housing Market Renewal and Community
links, Youth Works organised a fun day attended by over 400 people
of all ages including young people from both Youth Works programmes.
- Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale Fun Day - 20 August : this event
brought together all departments within Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale
to showcase the range of projects that Groundwork delivers in the
area. The event was attended by over 300 members of the community
and involved young people from both of the Youth Works programmes.
Other significant individual programme updates are as follows :
Youth Works Chadderton
From June to August 2005 a total of 395 young people have attended a
wide range of activities such as outdoor pursuit sessions, sport
sessions and many other team building activities, which enable young
people to have the chance to build on their confidence, communication,
leadership and problem solving skills.
Other summer activities include the following :
- Pocket Park - Youth Works has worked in partnership with Oldham
Council and ASDA to regenerate a local park. The programme gathered
together local young people who helped enormously with this
make-over, which involved gardening, cleaning and painting. The new
look of the park has helped in changing the perceptions of the older
generation towards the young people.
- Home Watch - Youth Works staff are accompanied by several young
people at these monthly community meetings, which helps build
bridges with the young people and other local residents. In addition
these meetings provide Youth Works with an opportunity to keep local
residents informed of all accessible provision ie school holiday
schemes, evening provision and multi agency projects.
- Chadderton Area Action Team (Chadderton is one of 6 area
committees of Oldham Council and the Area Action Team is a multi
agency partnership) - Youth Works staff attend this meeting once a
month to brief other partners on new projects and especially to
offer assistance in tackling anti-social behaviour (eg doing
outreach sessions out of the usual area to assist the police when
hotspots have been identified)
- Area Committee Youth Sub Group (YSG) - Youth Works have
nominated 3 young people to be representatives of the Area Committee
Youth Sub Group. Youth Works staff support the nominated young
people representatives when attending meetings, training sessions
etc. The concept of the YSG is to ensure that young people are
involved in the decision making processes and strategies and to
ensure that young people are able to give their opinions and offer
solutions when required. The YSG membership consists of 10 young
people, 3 elected and 3 co-opted members from the area committee,
key youth providers (Youth Works and Youth Service) Area Manager and
Police/Community Safety representative.
Youth Works Stoneleigh
A total of 425 young people have attended a wide range of activities
held at a number of different locations during the last quarter, these
have included :
- Assertiveness & meeting people skills training course, 11 June :
it was identified via one to one sessions with eight young people
that they could benefit and gain confidence from such a training
course. The training was held at Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale’s
office and delivered by a professional trainer.
- Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Expedition, 9 - 10 July : a group
of 12 young people throughout the Oldham borough participated in the
expedition three of which attend the Youth Works Stoneleigh
programme.
- Basic Food Hygiene Course, 26 July : a group of 10 young people
successfully gained an NVQ in Basic Food Hygiene.
- Team Fire Experience, 22 - 23 August : Oldham Fire Station ran a
two day course that involved young people from different areas of
Oldham to work together in small groups to solve a number of tasks
and problems and educate them on fire safety, how a fire station
operates and the duties and responsibilities of the fire officers.
Four young people from Youth Works Stoneleigh participated in this
initiative.
- Road Traffic Accident, 24 August : working in partnership with
the Neighbourhood Road Safety Initiative and Greater Manchester Fire
Service this project was organised to educate young people in the
risks of dangerous driving. Youth Works helped to organise a dummy
road traffic accident in Oldham Town Centre that involved six young
people from Stoneleigh and was watched by over two hundred people.
- Youth Works Stoneleigh has a Youth Forum that consists of six
young people aged between 15 - 16 years and is attended by a core
group of fifteen other young people. Partners involved in the forum
are Community Links, Community Support Officers and First Choice
Homes. The group meet on a regular basis to discuss relevant
problems/issues young people face in the community. From this the
group are able to address these problems, which often results in the
forum organising an event that allows for councillors/Police
Community Safety Officers to come and speak to young people, listen
to their concerns and offer joint solutions.
