Programme Description

Based on the Avenham Estate in Preston, Youth Works is a programme funded by a number of key agencies including the Youth Justice Board (YIP), SRB and Positive Futures.

The initiative aims to address local issues such as community safety and seeks to offer a range of activities to attract young people into positive lifestyles through a number of diversionary and educational pursuits.

The programme targets young offenders and those at risk of committing crime through outreach work, mentoring schemes and peer education.

Most of the key youth activity is based at the Youth Works Hubsite that was launched in September 2001.

The Hubsite provides activities that give young people the opportunities to :

  • play a visible and creative role in their environment
  • gain new skills and enhance employment prospects
  • become involved in local initiatives relevant to themselves and their families.

The programme is managed by Colin Fox who was appointed in March 2003 and is supported by a number of full and part time youth workers.

  • Women’s Health Conference @ SANAC in Avenham.
  • Positive Futures open day @ The Hub.
  • Theatre trip/workshop with Dynamic New Animation.
  • Project Officer appointed in February to support the development of a number of projects.
  • A trip to Arizona for a Youth Works beneficiary to take part in a film exploring issues around the penal system in America.
  • An opportunity has been made available to a beneficiary from Wysemove (service provider for homeless 16-25 yr olds) to deliver a guitar project @ The Hub.
  • Total attendances January – April 2006: 830 (219 young people)
