Programme Description
Youth Works Jarrow started in February 2003 with the appointment of
Programme Manager, Julie Crocker. The programme is supported by one
part-time member of staff and 16 volunteers.
Youth Works Jarrow is located on the Low Simonside estate with the
majority of engagement with young people at the Community Centre on the
Low Simonside estate and at the Community Market Garden Project.
During the last three years of delivery, Youth Works Jarrow’s main
partners have been the Police, Porlock Community Garden, Low Simonside
Community Centre, NCH, Fairbridge and the Drug Action Team.
Activities delivered to April 2006
The programme has delivered a varied range of activities during the last
quarter, the most notable being :
- The multi-use games area that was opened in October 2005 has
been hugely successful. We offer football coaching every weekend and
young people have responded to this. The huge problems that were
there previously around youth disorder have diminished to the point
that no incidents have been reported to the local police or the
community wardens during this quarter.
- Project ran a very successful flower-arranging course where 22
women attended. The feedback was fantastic and has led to other
things including taster days being run at the centre.
- Healthy-R-Us walking and cooking group meet weekly (in
partnership with Choosing Health).
- Family Line Dancing continues every Friday night.
- Management of £18k Development Fund from Barclays concerning the
Multi-Use Games Area. Looking into spotlights for the pitch after
young people’s consultation. It has been a resounding success and we
have received brilliant feedback from the residents.
- The Outreach Manager for Low Simonside is also running a project
on another estate (Boldon) 3 days per week. Due to funding
implications this will be reviewed at the end of June.
