Programme Description
The third Youth Works programme based in Wigan is presently under
development made possible by funding of £298,846 from the Coalfield
Community Regeneration Fund.
- Recently acquired full occupation of the drop-in centre.
Consultation with young people regarding refurbishment and input
into the layout of the activities room. We actually ran a
competition in each of the schools and asked the young people what
they would want to see in this room that would encourage them to
register with this project and visit us regularly. Some young people
gave the usual response, for example, ‘Play station and T.V’ but
again others suggested an ‘aquarium’, ‘library’ and ‘computers’. All
of these results will and have been taken into account during
refurbishments and when we are planning the contents of the room.
First, second and third prizes were given for the best ideas.
- 60 young people already registered with the project.
- Project is busy recruiting local volunteers to help deliver
activities for young people.
- Undertaking two sessions a week in two Primary Schools, which
have included off site activities such as swimming.
- Working closely with the local Educational and Behavioural
Difficulties High School. A recent trip to the local Police Station
for a Police Awareness session and Manchester United Tour proved
very successful to the point that a Police Officer suggested he had
rarely seen such concentration in young people and commended them as
well as the staff members for their excellent behaviour.
- Youth Works requested to attend the Community Safety Group in
order to further target the anti-social behaviour in the area.
- We are currently working closely with Wigan and Leisure Culture
Trust in order to secure funding to develop and fence off a local
football pitch. The vision is to then allow the Youth Works project
to manage this pitch and utilise the skills and knowledge of a local
person to develop additional sporting facilities to be used by the
young people at Higher Folds.
