Programme Description

Jacquie Mutch was appointed as Programme Manager in April 2005 following the promotion of Harry Kelly who is now area manager for the development of the Youth Works programme within the Wigan area. To date a lot of work has been done in collaboration with local residents, other agencies within and indeed outside the local area.

In the period January to April 2006 Youth Works has moved forward in the following areas:

  • Youth Works hosted a “New Events” open week at the Hubsite attended by young people, community groups and partnership agencies. Many parents came along to find out what Youth Works in Worsley Mesnes is currently providing, and were pleasantly surprised by the variety and numerous activities currently available. The week was successful and staff received many ideas to help improve and develop the Hubsite further.
  • A new recycling scheme has been introduced at the Hubsite. YWWM has worked closely with the local schools and the wider community on this initiative. All the young people are now fully aware of the importance of recycling and looking after their community environment. The Hubsite has reduced its waste by 85% and reuses a lot of the materials for ‘Arts’ projects.
  • February 2006 – delivered a one-week environmental awareness project to years 5 and 6 with St James Church of England Primary School. Youth Works plans to replicate this project with St Jude’s Primary School.
  • Positive Futures has continued to work closely with YWWM staff during the Girls’ Group. During this quarter the group has completed a 4-week certified Rock-Climbing course at North Face, Rock-Climbing Centre, Warrington. The team have also provided numerous activities, such as, Henna Tattoo, team building, and problem solving.
  • 3 young people successfully completed the Motorcycle Compulsive Basic training programme, which was held at The Hubsite.
  • Youth Action Group now has 12 members representing all the age, gender and session groups. During the past 3 months they have assigned specific roles within the group, a Code of Conduct, and a suggestion box. The Action Group helped to plan the Easter half-term activities for the project.
  • Volunteers – 5 new volunteers recruited. One long term volunteer has gained employment with Groundwork Wigan and Chorley as a Youth Development Assistant working on the Breakthrough programme. Seven of the volunteers have been on training in the last 3 months. This has included Basic First Aid, Induction, and Personal Safety. During the next quarter volunteers are already booked on to 4-Day First Aid, LINK (publicising events), and Treasury training.
  • A new Youth Development Officer, Nicola Ratcliffe, joined the project in January working alongside the existing staff in Worsley Mesnes.
  • Total attendances January – April 2006: 192 young people.
